Montclair State University has partnered with Heartland ECSI, giving you the option of receiving your 1098-T school record electronically.

Qualified tuition fees declared in box 1

As a reminder, in previous years, your 1098-T included a number in Box 2 who represented the Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses (QTRE) we charged your Montclair State University student account for the calendar year. Due to a change in institutional reporting requirements under federal law, beginning with the 2018 tax year, we now present in Box 1, the quantity of QTRE paid during the calendar year.

Why the change?

Based on a report compiled by the US Inspector General of Taxation, it was determined that there were a large number of errors with respect to education tax credits. The majority of these errors were caused by confusion regarding box 2 reports (amounts invoiced). This change eliminates this confusion and the potential for inaccuracies on 1098-T forms in the future.

What does this mean to you?

This means that you will no longer see any amounts in Box 2 (Amounts Invoiced for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses) on your Form 1098-T. However, you will see an amount in Box 1 (Payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses-QTRE). This box shows the total payments received by a qualifying educational institution in 2021 (from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021) from any source for eligible tuition fees and related expenses less any refunds or refunds made in 2021 that occur relates to those payments received regardless of the term paid.

No social security number?

If you do not have a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) on file with the state of Montclair, a 1098-T, for calendar year 2021, will not be created for you.

Did you change your social security number?

If you have recently changed social security, you must complete the Social security form with the Registrar’s Office.

  • If you are on campus, bring the completed form along with your official documents to Red Hawk Central 1-Stop at Cole Hall (2nd Floor Atrium) to submit the documents for processing.
  • If you cannot make it to campus, mail official notarized copies of the completed form and official documents to: Office of the Registrar, Montclair State University, 1 Normal Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07043.
