Yet another supports-oriented product developed by AAIDD!

The second edition of the best-selling Positive Behavior Support Training Curriculum (PBSTC) by Reid and Parsons is the latest in the line of supports-oriented products developed by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Since the early 1990s, AAIDD has been a leader in advocating the supports paradigm. Supports refer to an array of resources and strategies, including individuals, agencies, money and tangible assets, or environments that enable people with developmental disabilities to live in regular community settings. The PBSTC teaches direct support professionals positive behavior support principles to reduce challenging behavior while working with people with intellectual disabilities, and fosters a culture of dignity and respect. The Curriculum shares some common principles with the Supports Intensity Scale: Respect for rights of all citizens, including people with intellectual disabilities, focus on the importance of the individual; treating people with dignity; and making sure consumers are not neglected or abused.

Learn how three states implemented SIS in this audio presentation!

The AAIDD Annual Meeting in Atlanta this May featured a special theme session with leaders from the states of Washington, Georgia, and Louisiana, early adopters of the Supports Intensity Scale. Now hear them talk about how they implemented SIS in their respective states in this audio recording of the session. The session includes the following presentations: “Moving the Money: Individual Development Accounts for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities” by Stephen Hall (Georgia); “Developing a Statewide System for Individualized Planning and Resource Allocation Using the Support Intensity Scale” by James LeVelle and Scott Meche (Louisiana); and “Implementing Standardized Assessment in Washington State” by Linda Rolfe, John Stern, Lisa Weber.  Click here to hear the presentation.

A recent free User’s Guide published by AAIDD discusses best practices in how the AAIDD supports-based system of defining and diagnosing an intellectual disability benefits the work of professionals such as, clinicians, special education teachers, program managers, and government officials in developmental disability. The AAIDD definition system views intellectual disability as a condition that can be enhanced by providing appropriate supports, rather than an absolute life-long trait. Just like the Supports Intensity Scale, the focus here is on the individual and his or her unique strengths, abilities and needs.
