Rating support needs for activities a person has never done
A frequently asked question on the administration of SIS is: What about rating the support needs for activities that the person does not do, has never done, and has no intention of doing? It is important to remember the following instruction from the SIS User’s Manual: ‘All items should be completed, even if the person is not currently performing a listed activity.’ This is especially true for certain items like ‘Obtaining legal services’ (Section 2, Item 6). The biggest concern is ensuring that the interviewers remember this instruction throughout the administration of SIS. When an individual is not currently performing an activity, it is critical for the interviewer, using his/her clinical judgment, to guide the respondent in estimating the support needed for that individual to be successful in participating in the activity. Thus, one needs to assess the individual’s support needs holistically and in accordance with their current status and functioning. A person with low motivation, short attention span, low tolerance for learning, medical fragility, and/or limited cognitive ability will likely require high levels of support to be successful in the activity.
